Escape into the quieter side of Northern Thailand on a scenic self-drive journey through mountain roads, lush forests, hidden caves and peaceful small towns. From the relaxed charm of Pai to the misty lake of Pang Ung and the Yunnan-inspired village of Ban Rak Thai, this journey invites travellers to slow down, explore at their own pace and discover a more tranquil side of Thailand. The journey takes you through three destinations in Northern Thailand: Chiang Mai, Pai, and Mae Hong Son, completing a scenic loop through the region.

Day 1: Chiang Mai – Pai

Pick up your rental car in Chiang Mai and begin your journey toward Pai. En route, you may wish to stop at Mok Fa Waterfall, a pleasant natural stop surrounded by forest, where a short walk leads to a scenic waterfall. Alternatively, you may relax at Pong Dueat Hot Springs, known for its geothermal activity and peaceful setting. Upon arrival in Pai, you may explore the town’s relaxed atmosphere. A visit to Pai Canyon offers panoramic views, especially at sunset, while Wat Phra That Mae Yen provides a peaceful hilltop setting overlooking the valley.

Day 2: Pai – Mae Hong Son

After breakfast, continue your journey through mountainous landscapes toward Mae Hong Son. Along the way, you may wish to visit Tham Lod Cave, an impressive cave system featuring large chambers, stalactites, and stalagmites, often explored by bamboo raft along an underground stream. Scenic viewpoints along the route provide opportunities to pause and enjoy the surrounding valleys. Upon arrival, you may explore the town and visit Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang, two elegant temples located beside a tranquil lake in the town centre. Overnight in Mae Hong Son Estimated driving distance: approximately 110 km.

Day 3: Mae Hong Son (B,-,-)

Today is at leisure to explore the surroundings of Mae Hong Son. You may wish to begin with a visit to Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, set on a hilltop and offering panoramic views over the town and surrounding mountains. Continue with an excursion to Pang Ung, a tranquil natural setting where a calm lake is surrounded by pine forests and often covered in morning mist. Nearby, you may also visit the village of Ban Rak Thai, known for its Yunnanese heritage, tea plantations, and peaceful lakeside atmosphere. This combination offers a rewarding full-day experience, blending natural scenery with cultural discovery. Overnight in Mae Hong Son

Estimated driving distance: approximately 120 km.

Day 4: Mae Hong Son – Mae Sariang (B,-,-) 

After breakfast, continue your journey south toward Mae Sariang. En route, you may wish to stop at Namtok Mae Surin National Park, home to one of the highest waterfalls in Thailand, dramatically cascading down a steep cliff surrounded by lush forest. Upon arrival in Mae Sariang, you may explore this quiet riverside town along the Yuam River, known for its laid-back atmosphere and local charm. Overnight in Mae Sariang Estimated driving distance: approximately 165 km.

Day 5: Mae Sariang – Chiang Mai (B,-,-)

Drive back to Chiang Mai, completing the Mae Hong Son loop. Upon arrival, return your rental car in the city or at Chiang Mai International Airport. Estimated driving distance: approximately 190 km.
