Explore the diverse side of Northern Thailand on a scenic self-drive journey through limestone mountains, hidden caves, rolling tea plantations and cultural landmarks. From the peaceful surroundings of Chiang Dao to the tea-covered hills of Mae Salong and the legendary Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet along the Mekong River, this journey blends nature, culture and discovery at every turn. The journey takes you through two provinces in Northern Thailand: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, completing a scenic loop through the region.

Day 1: Chiang Mai – Chiang Dao

Pick up your rental car in the city and begin your journey into Northern Thailand. After approximately one hour, you may wish to stop in the Mae Taeng area, known for its lush countryside and tranquil atmosphere. The Mae Taeng River is one of the region’s scenic highlights, where you may enjoy a short break or an optional bamboo rafting experience. Continue to Chiang Dao, a peaceful destination surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. You may wish to explore the Chiang Dao Cave and nearby Wat Tham Chiang Dao. The area is dominated by Doi Chiang Dao, whose dramatic limestone peaks form a striking natural backdrop.

Estimated driving distance: approximately 75 km.

Day 2: Chiang Dao – Mae Chan

After breakfast, continue your journey north through scenic mountain landscapes toward Chiang Rai - Mae Chan. En route, you may wish to stop at Wat Thaton, which offers beautiful views over the Kok River from its hillside setting. You may also visit Choui Fong Tea Plantation, where rolling green hills create a picturesque landscape. Alternatively, a detour to Doi Mae Salong offers insight into the region’s tea culture and Yunnan heritage, set amidst cooler mountain surroundings. Overnight in Chiang Rai

Day 3: Mae Chan – Chiang Rai

Today, you may wish to drive to the renowned Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet along the Mekong River. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views over the river and surrounding landscapes. A visit to the Hall of Opium provides an interesting insight into the region’s history. Drive back to Chiang Rai, where you may explore its most iconic landmarks. Highlights include the striking Wat Rong Khun, as well as Wat Rong Suea Ten and Baan Dam Museum. In the evening, you may enjoy a leisurely stroll at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar.

Overnight in Chiang Rai

Estimated driving distance: approximately 140 km.

Day 4: Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai

The journey follows Highway 118, a well-maintained scenic route with gentle curves through the hills, offering a comfortable drive back to Chiang Mai.
