Cool-Cationing in South Africa

While winter in Southern Africa normally consists of huddling away at the nearest fireplace, trying to escape from the torrential downpour and cold outside, there is one place where the cold weather is embraced - Afriksi Lesotho!

People have been skiing in various Southern African mountain ranges since 1929. One of the most ideally suited locations are the Maluti mountains in the Kingdom of Lesotho. A lot has changed since 1929 and the introduction of modern snow making facilities and lifts to Afriski since 2004 have allowed skiing and snowboarding to flourish in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

The resort operates much as a European ski village does including all the essential components for a great ski holiday, from the accommodation, ski equipment, snow passes, ski school, food etc.

Afriski is often referred to as the "winter playground for skiers and snowboarders alike"; but is increasingly more popular during the warmer summer months; with the greenest valleys and mountains, baby blue skies and earnest African sun, making it the ultimate setting for exploration and fun.

With a beautiful mountainous landscape that stretches the horizon, matchless views, fresh mountain air, and miles of untouched territory waiting for you to explore, it is no wonder that Afriski Mountain Resort (and the greater Lesotho area) is known as the "kingdom in the sky".

The Resort is an adventure-seeker's paradise - with majestic mountain terrain to explore through various biking and hiking trails, abseiling, paintballing, cultural trips and a whole range of activities.

Best time to visit:

A good time to visit is towards the end of July, when the snow is at its thickest and the school holiday rush is over. This is also the nest time for natural snowfalls!

Ideal for:

This unique destination, tucked away in the highlands of northern Lesotho is equally ideal for families looking to spend quality time together and seeking adventure; as it is for couples in need of a romantic mountain escape, with plenty of high energy on-site activities to enjoy together.

What makes the property unique:

Afriski is an entirely safe-contained mountain leisure destination. Although modelled on classic European ski resorts, it has a distinctly African flavour entirely in keeping with its setting high in Lesotho's Maluti Mountains.
